Number - Multiplication and Division
Welcome to Week 7 and a huge well done for all your hard work so far. This week we are returning to Number work and focusing on multiplication and division.
Monday to Thursday - Multiplication and Division Booklet
This week is all about consolidating multiplication and division strategies, children are being supplied with a booklet that covers a range of strategies including questions which need to be done mentally and others in written form. Children can work through the booklet at their own pace choosing which activities to do. Each booklet has a complete set of answers
Key Vocabulary
Like we did back in week 5 when thinking about addition and subtraction, ask your child to list all the words they know for multiplication and division. How many did they come up with? Check them off from the picture below.
All these words indicate whether we are going to multiply or divide. When working with you child this week try to incorporate key language from the picture each day.
Quick Recall of Facts
Multiplication and division facts are the inverse of one another, if 6 x 12 = 72 then 72 / 12 = 6. Children who struggle with division facts or with solving more complex multiplication word problems need more practise going over their times tables. Click the link below to play ‘Hit The Button’ choose the times tables facts or division facts. Playing these repeatedly will help build speed and quick recall of the facts.

Once children know their times tables and are confident recalling them they are able to complete grid and column method multiplication calculations, short division and multiplication and division word problems.
Multiplication Revision - Column Method or Grid Method?
Column Method
Column multiplication (or long multiplication) is a written method of multiplying numbers (usually a two- or three-digit number by another large number). Column multiplication is a faster, more efficient technique to use. Sometimes children can get confused if multiplying a number by a 2 digit number. Let’s look at the example below, 391 x 39. First we multiply by 9, once we have done that we then multiply by the digit in the tens column which is 3. Before multiplying, we must remember to put in a zero, indicating we are now multiplying by a ten. This is something that can often be forgotten.
Grid Method
The grid method is a written method used to teach children multiplication. It involves partitioning numbers before multiplying them. Look at the example below.
The Grid Method can also be used to multiply decimals.
Division Revision
Short Division with Remainders (r)
Sometimes numbers are too large to divide mentally, so short division or bus stop method is used. If the number cannot be divided evenly it will give an answer with a remainder (r), which you can round up or round down. Look at the example below.
To find the answer to 365 ÷ 7 see if 3 (the hundreds) can be divided by 7.
It cannot, so add the tens digit. 36 ÷ 7 = 5 r 1.
Write down the 5 and carry over the 1 so 5 becomes 15.
15 ÷ 7 = 2 r 1.
Write those numbers down. The answer is 52 r 1.
Short Division with Decimal Remainders
As children become confident with short division with a simple remainder, they will progress on to finding what the decimal remainder is. Click on the YouTube link below to watch the video explanation.
Friday - Friday Test
This week's times table focus was x8. Ask your child their x8 tables in a random order ensuring you cover all times tables from 0 x 8 to 12 x 8.
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
