Education in Belfast

NEW ELMGROVE SCHOOL OPENED

ACCOMODATION FOR 800

MOST UP-TO-DATE LINES

Elmgrove P.E. School (Beersbridge Road) Belfast which was officially declared open this afternoon in the presence of a large company by Alderman J.D. Williamson M.D. marks another step forward by the Belfast Education Authority and provides for the Bloomfield district a long felt want in the shape of a really up to date school in keeping with modern ideas.
The new school presents a particularly attractive appearance with its rustic brick facade, its red tiled roofs and artistic dormer windows, which light the second storey rendered necessary on account of limitations of building space. It is satisfactory to know that the bricks were made in Belfast.
The accomodation consists of : -
Senior school - Ten classrooms, two staff rooms, medical inspection room, classrooms etc.
Junior School - Ten classrooms including two large rooms devoted to infants, and the usual cloakrooms etc.

The infant rooms look directly on to the Castlereagh Hills and the French windows reach the ground enabling toddlers to enter and leave the playground outside at will.
There is accomodation for over 800 pupils and the prime teacher Mr. J. Sullivan has a most efficient staff under him.

FOUR ACRES OCCUPIED

The irregularly shaped four acres of ground occupied by the new school has been admirably laid out and the utmost use made of it, both from the economy and architectural standpoint.
At 3.30pm today the chairman (councillor D. Lyle Hall) and members of the Belfast Education Committee assembled in the prinicpal's room to receive the Lord Mayor (Alderman Sir Crawford McCullagh), Alderman J. D. Williamson M.D. J.P. and Miss Williamson.
The party then proceeded outside the school, where the school flag was unfurled by Miss Williamson amidst hearty cheers.

The magnificent gold key which was presented to Dr. Williamson as a memento of the occasion by Mr. J. Taggart on behalf of Messrs J. and R. Taggart, the builders of the school was manufactured by Messrs. F. J. Malcolm Ltd., goldsmith and silversmiths, 18 Chichester Street Belfast and is a particularly fine specimen of the goldsmith's art.

Rev. W.H. Smyth M.A. read a portion of Scripture and the Rev. D.D. Boyle led in prayer.
