Elmgrove Infant Block Fire Damage April 1976

Elmgrove Fire April 1976

Many of the emails and those of you who speak to me who attended the school in the 1970s seem to hark back to one event that overshadowed the 1970s at Elmgrove. A fire destroyed the back half of the infant block which was knocked down. Portacabins were used to house pupils for I believe three years. Mr. Grant tells me as the photos also show that the reason the fire caused so much devastation was the two main roof joists caught fire and so the roof fell in or slid off. In one picture you can clearly see where the joists should be joined to the side wall - but are not! I somehow think that Health and Safety wouldn't allow some of these photos to be taken today in the same circumstances. If you do have any memories please contact us.
