FOUNDATION STAGE (P1 and P2)

he Foundation Stage is the first stage of primary education in Northern Ireland and includes children aged 4–6 in Years 1 and 2. It provides a positive, nurturing and stimulating environment where children develop confidence, curiosity and a love of learning through play-based and practical experiences.

At this stage, learning is carefully planned to build on each child's interests and previous experiences. Children learn through exploration, investigation, creative activities, discussion and active participation.

The Foundation Stage curriculum focuses on six Areas of Learning:

  • Language and Literacy – developing speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.
  • Mathematics and Numeracy – building early mathematical understanding through practical activities and problem-solving.
  • The World Around Us – encouraging curiosity about people, places, nature and technology.
  • The Arts – exploring creativity through art, drama and music.
  • Physical Development and Movement – developing coordination, movement skills and healthy lifestyles.
  • Personal Development and Mutual Understanding (PDMU) – supporting emotional wellbeing, independence, relationships and respect for others.

Across all learning experiences, children also develop important skills in communication, using mathematics, and thinking and problem-solving, helping them become confident, independent learners.

Our aim is to ensure that every child feels happy, valued and successful as they take their first steps in education and establish strong foundations for future learning.
