KEY STAGE ONE (P3 and P4)

Key Stage 1 builds on the strong foundations established in the Foundation Stage and supports children as they become increasingly independent, confident and reflective learners. During Years 3 and 4, pupils continue to develop essential knowledge, skills and understanding through engaging, relevant and challenging learning experiences.

The Northern Ireland Curriculum for Key Stage 1 is organised into six Areas of Learning:

  • Language and Literacy – developing confidence and competence in talking, listening, reading and writing.
  • Mathematics and Numeracy – building mathematical understanding, reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • The World Around Us – exploring history, geography, science and technology through meaningful investigations and enquiry.
  • The Arts – encouraging creativity, self-expression and appreciation through art, drama and music.
  • Personal Development and Mutual Understanding (PDMU) – promoting emotional wellbeing, healthy lifestyles, positive relationships and respect for others.
  • Religious Education – helping children develop an understanding of Christian beliefs and traditions while fostering respect and awareness of other faiths and cultures.

Throughout Key Stage 1, children also develop the cross-curricular skills of Communication, Using Mathematics and Using ICT, alongside important thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills that support success across all areas of learning.

Our Key Stage 1 curriculum provides a supportive and stimulating environment where children are encouraged to achieve their full potential, develop a love of learning and grow into confident, responsible members of the school community.
